Root Canal (Endodontics)

Endodontics is the dental specialty dealing with the nerves of the teeth. Root canals are probably the most notorious procedure in dentistry and the most common endodontic procedure. When a tooth becomes infected it is usually related to the nerves in the root of the tooth. The infected nerves need to be removed. If left untreated, an infection can turn into an abscess, which is a much more serious problem that leads to bone loss in the jaw.

The area around the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic to start the procedure. The dentist will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. They will then be able to remove infected tissue and clean the canal. After the infection has been removed, the space if filled with a sealant called gutta percha. It is highly recommended that a tooth that has undergone a root canal is fitted with a crown. This will improve the appearance of the tooth and will make it more likely that the root canal is successful.

"Root canal" has become a scary term for dental patients to hear, but the benefits of the procedure and advances in dental technology have made it much less so. Local anesthetics and proper pain medication allow the procedure to be performed with little to no pain in most cases. There may be some soreness following the procedure, but that is normal for most dental procedures. Over the counter painkillers are usually enough to relieve any pain afterwards, but your dentist may prescribe medication. The procedure will also relieve pain caused by the infection, allowing you to enjoy all the foods you love without any pain from heat, cold, or biting too hard. If you are experiencing pain consult your dentist today.

Our family has been going to Giebenhain Dental for the past 25 years. The entire staff at Giebenhain Dental is extremely friendly and professional and they sure make you feel at home. Dr. Giebenhain is very knowledgeable and detail oriented. The office is very nice and comfortable and the view from the dental chair is very peaceful. I’ve had the opportunity of having both hygienists clean my teeth and they understand my sensitivity in a couple of areas and are very careful not to make me flinch. If you are looking for a dentist I would highly recommend Dr. Giebenhain and his wonderful staff.

My husband and I have been long-time patients and continue to love Giebenhain Dental even though we could go somewhere closer to our house. We love it because of the family atmosphere! Everyone is very professional, but also very personable and friendly. You always feel welcome from the minute you walk through the door.

Accommodating office hours, helpful appointment reminders and efficient care are just some of the benefits of dental care at Giebenhain Dental. The staff is friendly and professional and I love the "up north" feel of the office reception area. I highly recommend Giebenhain Dental.

Our family of five has been going to Giebenhain Dental for nearly 15 years -- Dr. John is the only dentist our girls have ever had. We enjoy the personal yet professional atmosphere during every one of our visits. The entire staff makes our family feel welcome and it's clear they truly care about our health and happiness. We always leave with a smile -- a cleaner, healthier smile! We wouldn't go anywhere else!
